Scope note
Formed in 1816 to encourage the emigration of free African Americans (and later manumitted slaves) to settlements along the coast of West Africa. It was dissolved in 1963 and its assets transferred to the Phelps-Stokes Fund (Africana Encyclopedia, 1999).
