Berlin Conference of 1884-1885, convened by Chancellor Otto von Bismarck of Germany, at which the major European powers negotiated and formalized claims to territory in Africa. The conference marked the climax of European competition for territory in Africa, a process commonly known as the Scramble for Africa (Africana Encyclopedia, 1999).
