Great Zimbabwe, situated on the southern edge of the Zimbabwe Plateau, 27 kilometres southeast of present-day Masvingo, was the capital of ancient Zimbabwe and is the largest known Iron Age site in southern Africa (Middleton, 1997). The ruins date from the 13th to the 15th century.
