Scope note
Designates both the First and Second Gulf War. The First Gulf War (January-February 1991) involved an international coalition of forces, assembled in Saudi Arabia under the auspices of the United Nations. They forced the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein's Iraqi forces from Kuwait, which they had occupied in August 1990. The Second Gulf War began on 20 March 2003 with the invasion of Iraq by a coalition consisting primarily of American and British forces.
