Scope note
Association established by the Belgian king Leopold II in 1877 as an outgrowth of the committee for the Study of the Upper Congo to explore the Congo River Basin and encourage trade and the 'civilization' of the indigenous people in the area. It was disbanded shortly after the Berlin Conference of 1885.
