Scope note
In December 1895 Cecil Rhodes, Prime Minister of the Cape, secretly commissioned Leander Starr Jameson to lead a force of mounted men into the Transvaal with the aim of overthrowing Kruger's government. The expected uprising of Uitlanders (non-Afrikaner whites) failed to materialize and the raiders were soon captured.
