Scope note
One of the four principal islands of the Comoro archipelago which preferred to remain under French administration, with the special status of a 'territorial collectivity', when the Comoros became independent in 1975 (Kirchherr, 1987). Following a referendum in 2009, Mayotte became France's fifth overseas department on 31 March 2011.
