Scope note
Formed in 1894 by Mahatma Gandhi to fight discrimination against Indian traders in Natal. Together with the Transvaal Indian Congress (TIC) and the Cape Indian Congress it went on to form the South African Indian Congress (SAIC). In the 1950s and 1960s activities came to a halt. Revived in 1971, the NIC was a founding member of the United Democratic Front (UDF). In 1992 the NIC was disbanded.
