Scope note
Conflict arising in the early 1990s involving various political movements and activists, the government of Nigeria, and foreign oil companies operating in the Niger Delta. Amongst the issues at stake: environmental degradation and oil pollution, and a demand for greater autonomy and control of the area's petroleum resources on the part of the region's ethnic minorities. From the early 2000s on the conflict became increasingly violent, with attacks on State and oil company targets, the emergence of armed militias, kidnappings, and a number of government military offensives. In June 2009 the government announced a 60-day amnesty.
