Although there is considerable evidence that the first AICs in various parts of Africa were offshoots of German missions, usually the Methodist preacher Nehemiah Tile is credited with founding the first AIC in 1883. From the 1890s onwards African-initiated religious movements, usually called 'separatist' movements because they separated themselves from missionary churches, are recorded throughout Africa. ... The proliferation of African independent churches is to be explained by the fact that they are essentially house-church movements with a strong emphasis on healing, prophetic gifts, and lay participation (uit: Encyclopedia of African and African-American religions, p. 237/238)
