MIS
BR. ASAR. The first recorded kingdom in Ethiopia grew around Aksum during the third century BC. According to many, Aksum was an offshoot of certain Semitic kingdoms of southern Arabia, and it eventually controlled the greatest ivory market in eastern Africa. Ethiopia influenced the nearly contemporary empire of Meroe in Sudan. Over the next few centuries, Aksum encroached more and more on Meroe until, when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Aksum conquered the Sudanese kingdom.
