A diplomatic confrontation in 1898 (Sept.-Nov.) between French troops, under Major Jean-Baptiste Marchand, and British forces, under General Kitchener, over their rival claims to Fashoda (now Kodok), in southern Sudan. After months of argument Britain's claims were recognized and the French forces stood down.
