BR. ASAR. The Yoruba state of Ilorin was conquered by rebellious commander Afonja in 1817, from the Oyo empire. Afonja sought the aid of Salih Alimi but was killed in 1831. The son of Salih Alimi became Emir, reducing the status of Ilorin from kingdom to principality. Under the protection of the Royal Niger Company on 18/2/1897 (Almanach).
