MIS
the sacred law of Islam, including the teachings of the Koran and the traditional sayings of Muhammad, prescribing both religious and secular duties and entailing in some cases strictly retributive penalties. The sharia has been supplemented since the earliest times by legislation adapted to the conditions of the day, and since the 19th century has been replaced in some states (e.g. Turkey, Albania) by westernized legal systems, while many other Islamic countries operate mixed systems. Saudi Arabia and Iran maintain the sharia as the law of the land, while elsewhere it is a source of dispute between Islamic fundamentalists and modernists (The Oxford English Reference Dictionary, 1996).
