HR. Later in the nineteenth century the Ndzundza section of the Ndebele, in the southern Transvaal, were involved in battles against the Pedi under Sekhukhune. Partly as a consequence of this hostility, they came into fierce conflict with the Zuid-Afrikaansche Republiek. The Ndzundza were defeated in 1882 after a long campaign, and the Z.A.R., determined to break their power, settled white farmers on the chief's land and dispersed the Ndebele as farm labourers.
