Descendants of (slave) soldiers of the Egyptian army stranded in southern Sudan during the Mahdist rebellion in the 1880s, subsequently recruited into the British and German East African colonial armies, and settled in various parts of Uganda and Kenya upon demobilization. The Nubi should not be confused with the Nubians, who originate from the region now covered by Lake Nasser.
