Location: Yoruba kingdom and empire, ruled by the Alafin (king), disintegrated in warfare in the 1830s, refounded ca. 1838, incorporated into the British protectorate of Northern Nigeria in 1900, present-day Oyo State. The original capital is now usually called Old Oyo to distinguish it from its successor, New Oyo, some ninety miles to the south.
