MIS
A Christian movement originating in revivalist meetings in Los Angeles in 1906. In Pentecostal assemblies people seek spiritual renewal through baptism by the Holy Spirit, as took place on the first Pentecost (Acts 2.1-4; see Whit Sunday). Glossolalia (speaking in tongues, or making unintelligible utterances under the influence of intense religious experience) is an accompanying phenomenon in many cases. Pentecostalism emphasizes the spiritual gifts of healing and prophecy and gives a central role to charismatic preachers (often laymen), (Pentecostal Churches. The Macmillan Encyclopedia 2001. Retrieved 30 June 2003, at www.xreferplus.com/entry/512426).
