HR. In 1847 the 17-year-old Samori Toure from Sanankoro in present Guinea, became a trader, later serving in the army of a Mandinka war-leader. In 1879 he formed his empire by conquest. From 1882 until his capture in 1898 Samori resisted the French and died in exile in Gabon in 1900.
