The eastern portion of Germany's former West African colony of Togo became the mandated territory of French Togoland after World War I. In 1946 it became a trusteeship under the UN. In 1956 the French government declared French Togoland a self-governing autonomous republic but the UN continued to treat it as a trust territory. The trusteeship was terminated in 1960 and Togo gained full independence on 27 April 1960 (Kirchherr, 1987).
