BR. Founded before 1200 the Emirate of Zaria, formerly called Zazzau, was ruled by a dynasty of 40 Hausa Kings (Sarkin Zazzau), which was driven out by the Fulani Jihad of 1804 and took refuge in Abuja. The Emirate was vassal to Sokoto. In 1902 it was conquered by the British. The Emirs have been chosen from the following Fulani clans: the Mallawa, the Bornawa, the Katsinawa and the Sulibawa. (Almanach). Kings and rulers: Shehu Idris, 18th Emir of Zaria (Sarkin Zaria) and 78th Emir of Zazzau (Sarkin Zazzau), 1975 - .
