A belief, widespread among early Christians, that Christ will soon return to reign on earth with his elect for a period of a thousand years preceding the Last Judgment. The idea was fostered by literal interpretations of the Book of Revelation (especially chapter 20) but was rejected by Origen, whose views on the matter became generally accepted... The political frustrations of colonial rule, combined with fundamentalist biblical teaching, fostered millenarianism among the indigenous peoples of Africa and Polynesia, where it sometimes took the form of cargo cults. Contemporary millenarian groups include the adventists and Mormons. (millenarianism. The Macmillan Encyclopedia 2001. Retrieved 27 June 2003, at www.xreferplus.com/entry/510119)
