Armed conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan which began in February 2003 and pitted a number of insurgent movements against the Sudanese central government and allied local militias known as the Janjaweed. Described by Western governments and the mass media as genocide, the conflict has been characterized by the continuous breaching of successive ceasefires and peace deals by both the government and the rebels.
