Scope note
Formed in 1970 as the Eritrean Popular Liberation Forces, following a split in the Eritrean Liberation Front. Renamed the Eritrean People's Liberation Front in 1977. Took control of Eritrea in May 1991 and formed a provisional government. Formed a transitional government at independence in May 1993. Renamed People's Front for Democracy and Justice in February 1994.
