Scope note
Intergovernmental organization of Northeast African countries created in 1996. IGAD superseded the Intergovernmental Authority on Drought and Development (IGADD), which was founded in 1986 to combat drought and desertification in the region. Members from the start were Djibouti, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, Sudan and Uganda. After gaining independence, the State of Eritrea joined in 1993, South Sudan in 2011.
