Scope note
Group of islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean that form part of Melanesia. Possessed by the French since 1853, the archipelago became a French overseas territory in 1946. In the referendum of 4 November 2018, New Caledonians voted against full independence, preferring to remain with France.
