Scope note
Area in the Horn of Africa under British administration from the late 19th century except for a brief period of Italian occupation (August 1940 - March 1941). In 1960 it was united with the UN Trust Territory of Somaliland (the former Italian Somaliland) to form the new Somali Republic (Kirchherr, 1987). In 1991 the Republic of Somaliland was proclaimed in the area but failed to receive international recognition.
