Scope note
Established in February 1968 at the initiative of President Mobutu, the UEAC linked Zaire to the Central African Republic and Chad, with the broader aim of promoting the establishment of a Central African Common Market. The Central African Republic withdrew in December 1968 and the UEAC then limped along for several years as a partnership of Chad and Zaire.
