Scope note
In 1989 l'Union du Maghreb Arabe (UMA) was created to safeguard the region's economic interests, foster and promote economic and cultural cooperation, and intensify mutual commercial exchanges as a precursor for integration and the creation of a North African Common Market. Membership: Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Mauritania and Libya.
