Scope note
Introducing changes to a nation's economy, such as currency devaluation, promotion of exports, and cuts in public services and subsidies. These cuts are usually made in order to qualify for a loan from the IMF, especially for countries experiencing difficulties in servicing foreign debt (A Dictionary of Geography, Oxford University Press, 1997).
